WOMEN’S HEALTH IN YOGA

Embodying the Feminine

Should women practice yoga any different from men? How might she modify her practice to be in accord with the changes her body undergoes throughout a life-time? A woman’s body is unique, for it is marked by transitions through puberty, the fertile years, menopause and post-menopause– the “wisdom phase”. When a woman can maintain a balanced and harmonious reproductive system, it leads to greater vitality and radiant wellness.

A yoga practice has the potential to support positive transformation through these natural cycles. In this program, we look at the optimal ways that a yoga practice can serve to support and nourish the body’s natural rhythms. We emphasize ways to honor our innate physiology by practicing intelligently and with intention. In this program we explore the ways in which specific sequences of poses can facilitate ease and give energy (shakti) during the changes in a woman’s life cycle. We show how the practice of all eight limbs of yoga can empower a woman to cultivate a lifestyle that supports her highest potential.

Given the pace and intensity of contemporary culture, we rarely take the time to honor the changes within our biorhythms. Instead, we are pushed to gain outwardly oriented, measurable achievements. In this course we lay the groundwork for turning inward at key times in a woman’s life cycle in order to attune to our body’s needs and to nourish the spirit. By connecting inwardly to the realm of spirit, we learn to nourish ourselves so that we can nourish others.

Surya and Linda both began practicing yoga in 1984. Their teaching is deeply rooted in their personal experience and extensive study.

Dear Surya and Linda…I just could not let this day go by without thanking you for the exceptional day today…Honestly, it was one of the most beautiful and nurturing, inspiring and uplifting yoga experiences I can remember. Lovely women, and a progression of asanas and chanting and nutritional information that were all just perfect. I love that you two amazing teachers live such rich and full and meaningful lives…with partners and children and constant new information…and the patience to share your enormous yoga experience with all of us. I left in tears on the way home: I was so touched and enriched, I can’t wait to join you both for more Women’s Workshops!

I have never before felt as though my period was something beautiful. In one day, I went from thinking of my menstrual cycle as a necessary inconvenience, to having a deep and glowing appreciation for it. Not only does it signify a woman’s fertility-a blessing that many women long for- but it cleanses a woman’s body of potential disease and toxins every month! Women are lucky to have such a clever body. Now, I have tools to nourish myself through my menses with my yoga practice.
Thank you so much Surya and Linda :)
