Yoga Practice and the Katha Upanishad | 2:00-5:00pm

Afternoons with Tias & Surya series

The Katha Upanishad is one of the earliest teachings on yoga. Through beautiful and dynamic language, it elucidates the path of yoga through the delightful tale of a yoga boy who dies prematurely. In this class we start with an overview of the book’s central teaching and then practice yoga for 90 minutes. We then spend the last hour of the class exploring selected passages from the text that speak directly to the experience of the state of yoga. Please read the Katha Upanishad in advance of the class.

Katha Upanisad: An accessible yet in depth study of one of yoga’s most delightful teaching

Smaller than the small, greater than the great,

    the atman dwells

in the cave of the heart of all creatures.

The Upanishads are a collection of mystical teachings on prana, yoga and god (Brahman) dating back as early as the 6th century BCE. The Katha Upanisad is a wonderful allegorical tale that describes
the encounter of a young boy, Nachiketas, with the deity of death Yama. Yama instructs the boy on the principle teachings of yoga. Included are many beautiful passages describing yoga as a flame in the heart, as the central channel in the body and as a horse drawn chariot. Following the practice of yoga and mediation we will spend time investigating the pith teachings from this remarkable text.
