The vayus are the five bodily "winds" that govern health and vitality in the yogic system. The word "va" in Sanskrit suggests movement, motion or activity. It is difficult to translate vayu directly, the most common translation used is wind, yet within the body, a more exacting definition may be bio-electrical activity. The vayus make possible all cellular function, all neuronal activity, all movement across pressure gradients, fluid pulsation and metabolic activity. In short the movement of the vayus suggest the pulsation and dynamic functioning of all life itself within the body.

In this course we investigate the five primary "wind channels"--apana, samana, prana, udana, vyana. By activating specific regions in the body through asana and related mobilization techniques (SATYA practice), we activate or mitigate the strength of each vayu. Due to stress, nervous tension, digestive disorder and postural instability the vayus become easily imbalanced. We map out the vayus' location in the body starting with apana in the pelvis and moving upward into the skull. Considerable attention is given to the relationship between each vayu and the organs and chakras relevant to each vayu. We practice both active and restorative asana sequences for each vayu and assign specific pranayama techniques for each vayu.

This training will take place at the Upaya Zen Center.

Training will begin at 8am at the Upaya Zen Center in the kitchen /dining area for orientation.

The training ends the last day after lunch at about 2pm.
